Houston Weekend

If your Houston weekend agenda needs a boost, I've found a few local events that are exciting, entertaining and enriching for busy professionals who have been cooped up in a office or a cubicle all week long and can't wait to get outside.

Urban Gardening, Armand Bayou Nature Center and Discovery Green are the top picks this weekend to get you out of the house and have some great outdoor fun in Houston.

Urban Gardening

This weekend is an ideal time to scout-out locations in your neighborhood or that weed-filled plot of land outside your office window to prepare for a community garden.

Flowers can beautify a landscape, but vegetable gardens have flowers that reward you for your hard work and taste better. The expert gardeners from Urban Harvest will teach you everything you need to know about a community/school garden.

They're offering a class in Houston soon, to teach the mechanics of organizing, maintaining and running a productive community garden. You can brighten just about any corner of your world with some incredible edible plants. Especially if there are vacant lots in your neighborhood, school or office.

Urban Harvest classes are open to anyone with an interest in growing plants. Their hands-in-the-dirt training will prepare you to grow vegetables, fruit trees and anything with roots in a variety of urban landscapes.

Armand Bayou Nature Center

On the 2nd & 4th Saturdays head over to the Armand Bayou Nature Center for a guided canoe tour of the bayou. The nature center's tour is part education, part outdoor adventure. Be prepared to paddle your own canoe on a guided tour down the backwaters of Armand Bayou.

It's a leisurely tour of the local wetland, that allows us city folks to observe birds, reptiles, deer and other wildlife who start their day on the bayou.

Discovery Green

If you missed all of the exciting action at last year's Ice Carving competition in Houston, which featured acclaimed ice artists from around the country using chainsaws and blow torches to masterfully transform blocks of ice into works of frozen art. Come out to Discovery Green Ice Day this weekend to witness this icy battle for yourself .

Your creativity will get a flowing as you watch the sculpting process which is as much a part of the competition as the finished products. Ice sculptor Reverend Butter of DLG Ice Factory will entertain visitors during the evening, with a show highlighting ice carving set to music.

Houston Weekend Activities

Don't let a little cold weather cause you to miss out on these fantastic Houston weekend events. It's a great way to try out that new parka so be sure to bundle up and get out of the house.

If you're willing to brave the cool Houston temperature and experience some of the great happenings taking place outdoors you'll find a big plus is that there won't be long lines and big crowds this weekend.

The street festival has been held annually in a several cities in the U.S. the past few years and adding more to it's list each year.

Houston Weekend-Hanging-out In Downtown Houston

People in Houston's Discovery Green
Houston weekends are perfect for just hanging out. One of the liveliest places to visit in any Texas city is the downtown area. Downtown Houston is no exception. Here is my list of 5 things that you can do that will make downtime in the downtown district fun.

Take Wedding Or Family Photos
Sample The Houston Cuisine
Visit The Farmer's Green Market
Take Your Dog for a Romp in The Park
Enjoy A Free Movie Or Music

The Downtown Green Market

When it comes to fresh fruits, vegetables and organic food the Downtown Green Market is the place you can find something for even the most discriminating taste-buds. The vendors are local merchants that come to the market on weekends to hawk their wares.

You can find locally produced honey, goat cheese, hand-crafted items, homemade pies, sweets and healthy treats for Fido too. These modern day farmers, bakers and candle stick makers are worthy of my...your...our support.

Capturing Houston's Mega-Beauty On Camera

There are buildings that represent some of the best known architectural styles in the downtown district. Art Deco, glass and granite skyscrapers and neo-Gothic structures. You could spend a whole day just gawking at the architectural features that bear a variety of symbolism from European cultures. In the district you'll see gargoyles, inscriptions, stone banding and decorative brickwork of bygone eras.
Photo At Houston Fountain

If you're not into buildings you can take pictures of the historical places, statues or the art work, that abound inside many of the buildings and on the streets of Houston.

You can try out that new camera or put an old one to good use by turning the dozen or so spouting, glistening and shimmering fountains and waterfalls on just about every major street into dramatic backdrops for some updated photos of you and the kids.

Great Texas Cuisine

Bring your appetite and you won't be disappointed by the broad selection of cuisine available in downtown Houston. You can find Cajun/Creole, Vietnamese, Cuban, Chinese and just about any other food that you may think you want to eat.

Bayou Place
Houston Center
The Tunnel
Allen's Landing
Discovery Green

If you are near any of these places you'll be able to follow your nose to some of the best food in town. You can eat at one of the greasy spoon restaurants, hot dog carts or enjoy a fine dining experiences at an award winning restaurant, all within the confines of downtown Houston.

Take Your Dog For A Romp In A Park

This city is home to two Westminster Kennel Club champions, Stump and J.R., the amazing Bichon Frise. And it's full of proud animal lovers that love to show them off at area doggy parks. Bring your furry friends out and about because there a several parks in downtown where the both of you can slow your roll, sit back, relax and feel the vibes that emanate from the peaceful surroundings.

Tranquility Park
Old City Hall Clock Plaza
Sam Houston Park
Sesquicentennial Park
Tranquility Park

The newest addition to the greenspace in Houston, Discovery Green is a pet friendly park. You will have to keep you dog on a leash, but your pet is always welcome at their events in Houston.

Enjoy Free Movie Or Music

Nighttime is the right time to come downtown. You'll avoid the fierce humidity and scorching heat of the Houston summer. Most nights it's easy to find a free movie or concert downtown.

Free screenings of some of the best short films and independent movies can be enjoyed at Dean's Credit Clothing, near the north end of Main St. You can also hear live music, buy local art and sift through old clothes.

The fact that the Angelika Film Center doesn't look like your typical megaplex movie theater, is perhaps why it's a favorite place for local movie buffs to hangout in downtown.

Discovery Green has you covered if you're a fan of old movies. They sponsor Downtown and A Movie Series. You can watch classic movies like Young Frankenstein, Planes Trains & Automobiles and other cinema favorites. In the cool of the evening they break-out a big, huge, Texas-size screen and let everyone chill on the lush green lawns, kick back in a chair or their favorite picnic blanket to watch the show.

More Fun Things To Do Downtown

Now if that's not enough stuff to fill your Houston weekend? Head to Midtown Houston and do a freestyle Houston tour of the hip urban community. It's only a short Metrotrain ride away, to enough diversions to fill a weekend list of things to do, until it's over flowing.

There are also more ideas on fun things to do in Houston weekend:Downtown. It's choked full of other FUNtastic stuff you can get into while hanging out in downtown.

Later next week, I'll fill in more details about the places that offer classes in Houston that are way cooler than ye old school rooms. But for now it's the weekend baby, give your brain trust a little R & R.

Houston Weekend: Boat Tours In Houston

Pontoon tour boat in Houston
Every Houston weekend from now until late winter is a good time for a fabulous getaway on a boat tour in Houston. Busy professionals need QT (quality time) to escape into the peaceful beauty of nature to contemplate, relax and enjoy life. If you could enrich, educate and entertain your family, friends or just yourself in the process, that would be a two'fer, right. Try this!

For a fun outdoor adventure on a weekend try one of the Boat Tours In Houston. There are some unforgettable local destinations that you, your family or group will enjoy during local boat tours, especially the one at the Armand Bayou Nature Center. It's open during the week, but Saturday and Sundays are my favorite days to visit this local ecological treasure.

Armand Bayou Nature Center

The natural beauty of the area is awesome and it's one of the few remaining places in the U.S. where you can experience wetlands, prairie and forest. These ecosystems are essential to preserving Houston's rich biodiversity. The ANC is the perfect setting for a fun interactive outdoor experience in nature on a weekend.

You can take your pick from guided canoe tours, pontoon boat tours, nighttime adventures and other exciting activities that are regularly scheduled things to do, at the Armand Nature Center.

Boat Cruises

The "Bayou Ranger" takes visitors on a boat tour in Houston, on a cruise down one of the tributaries of Armand Bayou. The pontoon boat offers unique opportunities to view local wildlife doing their thang. You could put together a private cruise for your friends, family or a group; Or come and meet some new folks on the cruises scheduled on most Saturdays.

There is a morning boat tour that provides a early view of whats happening down on the bayou before noon. A nocturnal tour in the nature center will yield a whole new crew of creatures, out and about in the woods.

Guided Canoe Adventures

The guided canoe trips at the center, travel the slow drifting backwaters of Armand Bayou Nature Center. It's a calm, leisurely way to spend a fall morning. The canoe tour provides ample time for wildlife watching, wetland education, relaxation and fun.

The watery tour is a pleasurable experience that gives you plenty of physical exercise paddling your canoe along, while enjoying the peace and beauty of nature.

Moonlight Cruise

When your daytime, things to do list, is full or the Houston sun keeps you inside until after sunset when it has completed it's westward trek, you can still find plenty to see, hear and do at the Armand Nature Center.

You'll hear the chorus of frog songs and owl calls. Your eyes will do quick scans and squint to see the workers on the night shift, raccoons, opossums, nutria, deer, owls, snakes, turtles and alligators, along the bayou. Their body color and slow quiet movements makes it easy for them to blend into the wooded background at night.

The tranquil ride on the pontoon boat at night, adds its own character that magnifies the beauty, ambiance and excitement of the forest after dark.

Planning Your Adventure

Take a look at the Armand Nature Center calendar to get a complete listing of the exact dates, times and phone numbers for any of these activities and lots more that deserve a place on that busy schedule of yours. The ANC makes it nice and easy for you plan your boat tour in Houston with reservations by phone or in person.

If you plan your Houston weekend ahead of time, you'll never run out of places to go or things to do that will educate, entertain and enrich the lives of you, your family and friends through fun outdoor excursions. You'll easily become known as the go to person anytime your family wants to have a great time on a fabulous getaway in Houston.

What To Do In Houston This Weekend

Trying to come up with what's a guy to do in Houston, on the weekend, after all of the summer trippin is just about over, makes having a daily routine a refreshing change. There's a solace in knowing what to expect and not having to dodge wet kisses or fresh lipstick at family reunions. And what about those visits to and from relatives, some that you don't miss not missing all year. Time for summer to end.

The best weekends always seem to require that you get up early. And early Saturday mornings is a good time to scurry down to the Midtown Farmer's market held in the parking lot of Tafia's. It's the place where you can get veggies fresh enough to make any mom proud of our shopping taste.

These locally grown treats are not the kind of hot house grown, genetically enhanced and rarely tasty, produce you get a the big chain grocers. All of the greens, tomatoes, squash and other vegetables that are sold at the Midtown Farmer's market, are full of flavor because they are raised on small plots of land in and around Houston or close by.

Shopping at Farmer's markets are not just for vegans and rawfers. It's for smart buyers who know that there is a measure of peace, relief and personal satisfaction when you know something about what, when, where and how the food that graces your table is grown. An added benefit is the sigh of relief you'll have after the next food recall from the local stores.

At the Saturday morning marketplace you get a chance to met and support the growers who provide you with the freshness that you need to stay healthy. If I seem to go on and on about the produce, it's because they are my favorites.

But they aren't the only things that you can get at the Midtown Houston Farmer's Market. There's fresh honey, baked goods and a few handcrafted items that show up from time to time at the market.

Houston growers and their patrons are a community of people whose lives are intertwined around a common passion, food. That's one of the reasons that Tafia's chef, Monica Pope offers her parking lot as a meeting place. She has a passion for fresh morsels of vegetables. Some of them are chosen to be a part of the recipes in her Saturday cooking class.

That's the real beginning of a first class meal. When a chef can cajole a few stringbeans from a vendor and toss them in homemade dressings and serve them quicker that the time it'll take you to find your debit card hiding behind a outdated library card and swipe it.

By avoiding the crowds at the big grocery stores and getting your shopping done early on Saturday mornings, at the Farmer's Market, it'll leave plenty of time to catch a power nap. Then you can sit back and surf Midtown Houston Restaurant and Entertainment Guide, another great local blog to help you find more fun things to do in Houston on the weekend.

Houston Weekend: Adventure Tours

A fun-packed Houston weekend should include an adventure tour. These are outdoor excursions where you can enjoy guided walks through former old growth forest, canoeing or riding on a pontoon boat. Each of these Houston tours give you a chance to see some of city's last natural ecosystems. Many of them are slowly fading into the concrete jungle.

Your adventure takes you into the natural habitats that are part of the protected nature parks along Armand Bayou, Buffalo Bayou and Sheldon Lake Park. The natural treasures, are populated by yellow pine, hickory, elm, sweetgum, oaks, and bottomland hardwoods and support active communities of wildlife .

Sheldon Lake Guided Tours

You will love taking a picturesque adventure on the guided nature walk that meets in the open air pond center at the park.
It's a group walk at a casual pace through the trails to learn some little known facts about Houston's native flora and fauna. The half-mile walk often includes the sighting of small animals, birds and other wildlife native to Texas and this area. The discussions and sites are driven by the group's interests.

Travel Down Armand Bayou In A Canoe

Turn and average weekend into one filled with an adventure, paddling out into the backwaters of Armand Bayou on one of the guided canoe tours. You'll enjoy a leisurely morning of sightseeing, animal watching, wetland education, relaxation and fun. It's an ideal way to get an up close and personal glimpse of numerous birds, reptiles, deer and other residents who are starting their day at the water's edge.

The tour travels approximately 2-3 miles round trip. Beginning and experienced paddlers are welcomed. Knowledgeable guides provide everyone with a brief orientation. Life jackets are provided. Check their calendar for the exact departure times of scheduled canoe trips.

Boating On Buffalo Bayou

The 2nd Saturday of every month is a great day to enjoy an adventure on Buffalo Bayou, part of the longest paddling trail in Texas. A large comfortable pontoon boat takes passenger for a cruise on the watery passageway. You'll go deep into the natural habitat, where the residents are cottontail rabbits, turtles, fishes, snakes, and occasionally a lonely gator.

The boat rides last about 30-minutes each, beginning around 10am and ending about 2pm, on the 2nd Saturday of each month, as long as the weather and water conditions permit safe traveling.

Every Houston weekend adventure trip is enjoyable, enriching and full of excitement. I highly recommend taking part in any one of these calorie burning, memory making Houston tours.
