7 Cool Things To Do At Museums In Houston

I can’t imagine paying good money to be bored, when there are so many cool things you can do at museums in Houston. That’s right I said museums!

Throughout history museums were the places where people went, in droves, to catch an up close glimpse of fascinating curiosities like two-headed calves and eight-legged frogs on display.

Today’s family of museums are motivated by a different impulse.

They are managed by modern curators, who combine the latest technology and history to implant in our memories the powerful stories, authentic images and diverse life forms of our past preserved through sculptures, specimens and scientific collections.

MFA-Houston

It almost goes without saying that in in order to preserve important items from antiquity for future visitors touching is not allowed. But what you can do that is take pictures.

MFA-Houston is one of the few museums in the world where its cool to capture snapshots of your visit on film. A picture along side of a national treasures is way more memorable than the stock photos in a brochure.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

MUFON (mutual ufo network) rates Texas as a 3, ranking it in the top 10 along with California for the frequency of UFO sightings making it a great place to try your hand at distinguishing planets from an actual UFO.

Saturday evenings throughout the year visitors to the George observatory can have the chance to “see the heavens” through the 36” telescope. You may spot the next UFO on a visit to the Lone Star state.

Childrens Museum

The CM-Houston is the go-to place, if you’re at your wit’s end with a child who brings home failing grades or straight C’s that you want to motivate to be more successful in school. The slogan “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” , drives home the fact that inspiring a child to travel the path to become lifelong learners is important.

CM-Houston houses a plethora of state-of-the-art exhibits focused on the needs and desires of children 0 to 12 years to be infotained.

A trip to the museum creatively imparts knowledge to kids using games and exhibits about common subjects like waves, rapids and specialized topics.

Participating in museum events might just be the trick to get them motivated, once they experience the social and emotional benefits of learning new things, outside of the academics and grades arena.

Health Museum

Stir up your family’s awareness about the importance of health with visits to the health museum. One of the must-see exhibits is the challenge gallery.

The gallery house several interactive games including a fascinating one called mind ball. The object is to relax your mind in order to move a ball to your opponents side of the table.

1940 Air Terminal Museum

Only at 1940 Air Terminal Museum, can you step back into aviation time through experiencing the collection of airplanes and related memorabilia in the Houston’s former air terminal. Many of the things you would take for granted about flying on early airlines are on display.

You’ll see everything aviation at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum. The collection includes planes and equipment even examples of early uniforms worn by jet-setting stewardess.

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

Museums are places that require constant updating and can go through multi-million dollar budgets in the blink of an eye. Take your family to the Buffalo Soldier Museum where you can learn the story about a part of history that is seldom told, the Black soldiers that served in U.S. mounted cavalry.

Best of all you can leave something behind to help the efforts to preserve the artifacts for future generations. It’s as simple as buying a brick.

It will enable the Buffalo Soldier Museum to disseminate the fact from fiction about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and their service in the defense and development of America’s expansion to the West.

Houston Museum of African American Culture

Discover world cinema, featuring up and coming directors and actors from across the globe in the narratives and voices that transcend the Black experience.

These world-class films are seldom seen on television. Many are contemporary films displaying the echoes, enigmas and experiences that can be heard in the tapestry of the African Diaspora.

We often forget that although the themes are the same from culture to culture, viewing them under a different light reveals a richer experience. Individual, separate, but an equally potent rays of color that are all a part of the tapestry of “God’s children."

There are so many more cool things you can do at museums in Houston. For instance museums are good places to donate your time, treasure and talent. These are a just a sampling of the local museums and some very simple things you can do to liven up a boring day, that I wanted to share with you.

If I didn't mention your favorite museum, don’t get upset. There are far too many to tell about all of them at one time. If your experience at these any of these places was different than mine and you want to share your opinion leave a comment below.

Feburary Events: Things To Do During Black History Month in Houston

Here's some more exciting February Events for you. There's still time to pencil-in some more Black history Month-2010 activities on your crowded schedule of things to do in Houston . I've added some of the incredible activities in Houston that highlight African American history.

The assortment of fun and entertainment that you can enjoy this month ranges from the sizzling hot sounds of Zydeco music and Jazz to engaging story-times for youth.

I've also put together some useful resources and events celebrating African American history from other parts of the country. I mixed in a few websites, places with more details on the contributions on African Americans in Texas and the U.S., so that you'll have plenty of stuff on African Americans to sink your chops into.

Oral History Projects

My grandma always said it's better to hear it from the horses mouth. That's one of the reasons written history isn't the only source of history. In 2009 the StoryCorps a mobile studio, stopped in Houston for three weeks to record personal interviews of local residents.
group of people
They plan to record and setup a permanent oral archive in the Library of Congress of face to face interviews with prominent citizens, well known businessmen and everyday people from all across the country, over the next decade. Our local public radio affiliate KUHF plans to air some of the Houston interviews later this year.

Mayor's Oral History Project

The city of Houston and several other major cities have several ongoing oral history projects to capture fascinating bits and pieces of their history from the last century.
Former mayor Bill White commissioned interviews of well known civic, political and business leaders that have been digitally recorded. These are people who were the eyewitnesses to the historical events that created the Houston we know and have come to love. There are a total of 100 interviews that will eventually be available to us through the Houston Public Library's webspace.

The Houston History Project

The University of Houston is creating The Houston History Project. It will be a learning laboratory for public history students. It's comprised of oral history, a history magazine and a Houston history archive. Their ultimate goal is to generate materials that can be used by teachers in public schools, universities, students, amateur historians and any one interested in Houston's vibrant history.

Famous Black Houstonians
Dr. Benard Harris
Houston is a place where beaucoup Blacks have left a legacy that paved the way for today's African Americans. Here are some of the names of famous Black Houstonians. You should become familiar with their accomplishments during the hundreds of February events that celebrate Black history in Houston.

Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr.
The First African American to walk in outerspace.
Sherman E. Stimley
Opened the first African-American Law firm in Texas to consult exclusively in tax-exempt bond law.
Dr. Lonnie E. Smith
He was the Smith named in; Smith v. Allwright. The 1944 landmark Supreme Court case which won the right of all African-Americans to vote in Texas primary elections.

That's enough talk about February events honoring Black history in Houston. You may be curious and want to learn more about your own family's history?

Downtown Houston: Self Guided Tours

Art Deco Building In Houston

Looking for things to do when you're in Downtown Houston? Visit the city's remnants from the roaring twenties and the early thirties, the jazzy Art Deco architecture. What sets it apart from other architectural styles are it's austere shapes. Even on a self-guided tour in Houston, the designs are easy to recognize. They boast the streamlined styling of modern technology fused with varied patterns and icons gathered from just about every culture in America's melting pot.

Art Deco Buildings Downtown

These 20th Century marvels stand side by side with modern glass and and steel monoliths that dominate the current skyline of downtown Houston. Be prepared to do a lot of walking to see these beautifully executed buildings. It's well worth the time.

A short written description on the art deco architectural treasures can be downloaded for a self-guided tour on the Downtown Houston website. I've included a brief sketch on some of them.

University of Houston

The University of Houston Downtown’s campus jettisons from the banks of Buffalo Bayou. It's composed of several smaller structures adjacent to the former Merchants and Manufactures Buildings. It can be easily accessed from the Metrorail that makes it's last stop in front of the main building.

City Hall

The lobby of City Hall glistens with classic Streamlined Moderne Art Deco. Its nickel bronze stair rails, lighting fixtures, and a cove – lit – ceiling features the world globe with Houston at its center. The beautiful murals in the ornate lobby were created by artist Daniel MacMorris.

Mellie Esperson Building

The Esperson building has a beautifully curved inset, at the Walker Street entrance. You'll love the huge bronze doors flanked by black granite “cheeks”. A stroll inside, will reveal marble walls and terrazzo floors that punctuate the rich character to the elegant lobby.

JP Chase Morgan Building

Take a peak at the illuminated crown screening the observation deck. There are incised wave patterns in the stone, which encases the lower levels. The carefully patterned bricks are part of the original floors of the exquisitely detailed building.

1001 McKinney Street Building

Earth colored brick piers form the main vertical elements, framing fenestration with detailed spandrels. Most of the first three stories reflect their former commercial use. Other elements that will delight art deco fans are the lintel panels with the Industrious Bee, the symbol of the City National Bank, which once occupied the building.

Many of the things to do that are in Downtown Houston on a self-guided tour in Houston, involve taking fascinating journeys to discover the potpourri of treasures just waiting for inquiring minds. I'd recommended picking an early AM visit on a cool day or just after 6 pm on warm summer evenings to avoid the frantic pace of the crowds and traffic in downtown.
