Houston Events:Family-friendly Entertainment

If you prefer advice from a real person on real fun-loving Houston events rather than just a calendar full stuff, you’re in the right place. I’ll try to help you avoid 3 types of events:
  • Those where you have to park miles away
  • The ones where have to stand in line for hours
  • Places where rowdy fans can spoil your day
Those where you have to park a mile away, The ones where have to stand in line for hours Places where rowdy fans can spoil your day

Once you throw out all those events, you pretty much eliminate the lackluster entertainment that ends up costing you way too much while providing very little value in return.

You are still left with plenty of opportunity for exciting, enjoyable and enriching times with friends and family. I put all of the events that happen in H-town into several categories:
  • Annual shows
  • Special events
  • Cultural activities
  • Houston Weekend: things to do

Houston Weekend: things to do

There is nothing weak about Houston’s weekly events. I’m not talking about the acts and shows that pass through. This is way cooler stuff to do in Houston that’s happening every weekend. If you are interested in stimulating a harmonious balance within your mind body and spirit, head over to Discovery Green, for a group activity.

Every week you can shape your booty and boost your chakras in the park by joining a fun-loving group of other participants for Yoga, Zumba and other stress eliminating exercises.

Sometimes if the weekends are the only free time n you have, then check out some of these other funtastic things to do in Houston.

  • Farmers market
  • Second Saturday Buffalo Bayou Boat Rides!
  • Recycling Saturdays
  • Hermann Park (hike-bike trails-Japanese garden-boat/train rides)
  • Plant and Vegetable Gardening Classes

What makes me an expert on events in Houston? I’m glad you asked. It’s that I work here, live here and I've been there and done that, at just about every kind of event happening in the city and a few around the state as well.

Kwanzaa celebration in Houston at Blue Triangle

Kwanzaa Activities

Some of the exciting events in Houston this week are the celebrations surrounding The 45th Season of Kwanzaa. The African American celebration ends just as the International Year of People of African Descent is getting underway in January 2011. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this event to promote a greater knowledge of and respect for the rich and diverse African heritage’s and cultures.

Here’s some of the events in Houston where you can participate in the 2010 Kwanzaa activities in the local community.

  • Shape Community Center
  • Third Ward Multi-purpose Center
  • Project Row House
  • Blue Triangle Multi-Cultural Center
  • Shrine Of The Black Madonna

Kwanzaa has origins in the African first-fruit harvest celebrations and modern roots in a celebration first held in California, in 1965 by US, a cultural organization founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga.

Since the inception of the holiday, Kwanzaa ceremonies have been formal occasions for African Americans to honor their ancestors and the ancient African tradition of spreading the good, the joy and the justice they want to see in the world.

The holiday’s main focus is on seven guiding principles, the “Nguzo Saba”. Each day a separate principle is discussed. They are considered the foundations of building healthy personal relationships and a strong African American community.

The Swahili concepts that make up the 7 tenants of the “Nguzo Saba” are listed below.

  • Umoja (Unity): Unity of the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): The inalienable right to name, define, create and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To work, build and maintain our community together recognizing that our brothers' and sisters' problems are our problems, and we can solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build, maintain and own businesses that benefit the community.
  • Nia (Purpose): The recognition of the larger vision of collective vocation. The building and developing the greatness within the African American community.
  • * Kuumba (Creativity): To inspire others and become innovate so that the community is more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • * Imani (Faith): To believe with all our heart in ourselves, the success of our people, and to respect our parents, our teachers, our leaders.

During Kwanzaa celebrations popular decorations and symbols designed to convey the seven principles are usually placed on a decorative mat.

A unity cup
A long candle holder
Hand made gifts
The tree of gratefulness
A straw mat
Ears of corn (yams or other produce can be used)
Hand made Zawadi (gifts)

These are some of the most popular symbols and Kwanzaa decoration used during events in Houston to illustrate the seven principles as well as posters of the seven principles, and a black, red, and green flag.

Kwanzaa activities serve as a reminder that that each of us have the capacity to use our life as a positive motivating force to impact the world we live in.

A moving forensic/art exhibit is one of the highlights you can discover during Black History Month in Houston. The Main St Theater, Buffalo Soldiers Museum, the Smithsonian and forensic sculptor Amanda Danning all have a piece to tell in a story that begins with a Buffalo Soldier, Thomas Smith.

You go behind the scene to see the science that drives forensic anthropology. It'll reveal some of the intricate details on how they work with sculptors to examine bones and bodies and uncover the identities and recreate the faces of unidentifiable human remains.

This display focuses on artifacts found at Fort Craig, New Mexico one of the outpost where the Buffalo Soldiers served after the Civil War. This incredible exhibit blends science and art to share the story of how once forgotten soldiers become the center of attention and admiration.

peopleexercising at outdoors in Houston
Come and be a part of one of the exciting events in Houston happening this weekend at the downtown Houston public library. It's a free Yoga session with Sharon Miller. Other fun and relaxing activities happening in the Bayou City include, watching TUTS (Theater Under The Stars) at Millers Outdoor Theater, or if you prefer the comforts of an indoor venue, SWAMP (Southwest Alternative Media Project) has free movie screenings over at the U Of H College of Architecture.

Free Yoga In Houston

Yoga focuses on combining breathing exercises, meditation and with Yoga movements and poses to achieve a deeper state of relaxation to allow the brain to quiet and the body ceases to exert movement or effort.

In order to relax, you need to trigger your relaxation response. Many practitioners of Yoga claim that results from even a low to moderate level of yoga exercises provide a perfect stress fighting routine, after experiencing a challenging personal crisis or stressful daily event.

Yoga is not just a set of exercises but an entire philosophy of being with the goal of achieving peace of mind and body. A typical Yoga class begins with active poses and ends with a brief restorative pose, savasana, to prepare the student to re-enter the outside world.

Stress Prevention Exercises

The more you do it, the more it can work as a preventative measure rather than a cure. We're faced with stress, all around us. The daily events in Houston encountered by a typical urban dweller, makes us more sensitive to stress than others. The upside is that we can dramatically benefit from using Yoga, an ancient practice that's giving modern man a better way to deal with blues, blahs and stress in the 21st Century.

There aren't many events in Houston where you can actually leave feeling vibrant and recharged instead of physically and financially drained. This free Yoga class is one of them; it may just be the pick me up your mind, body and soul has been screaming for.

African American History In Houston-InterActive Theater

Interactive Theater actors
The Interactive Theater serves up a piece of African American history this month, performing "Harriet Tubman's Freedom Train".

The historical drama may seem pale in comparison with the real life adventures of Harriet Tubman a fearless runaway slave, who became a heroine by helping hundreds of slaves free themselves from bondage through clandestine trails and backroads, better known as the underground railroad.

A virtually undetected part of the southern escape route ran from Texas to Mexico, little if any information exists about how it functioned or how many African Americans quietly blended into the Mexican populace during the mid-1800's.

African American history month in Houston should always bare reminders of the harrowing adventures of Tubman and the other conductors and safe havens that operated along the underground railroad.
