Houston Events:Family-friendly Entertainment

If you prefer advice from a real person on real fun-loving Houston events rather than just a calendar full stuff, you’re in the right place. I’ll try to help you avoid 3 types of events:
  • Those where you have to park miles away
  • The ones where have to stand in line for hours
  • Places where rowdy fans can spoil your day
Those where you have to park a mile away, The ones where have to stand in line for hours Places where rowdy fans can spoil your day

Once you throw out all those events, you pretty much eliminate the lackluster entertainment that ends up costing you way too much while providing very little value in return.

You are still left with plenty of opportunity for exciting, enjoyable and enriching times with friends and family. I put all of the events that happen in H-town into several categories:
  • Annual shows
  • Special events
  • Cultural activities
  • Houston Weekend: things to do

Houston Weekend: things to do

There is nothing weak about Houston’s weekly events. I’m not talking about the acts and shows that pass through. This is way cooler stuff to do in Houston that’s happening every weekend. If you are interested in stimulating a harmonious balance within your mind body and spirit, head over to Discovery Green, for a group activity.

Every week you can shape your booty and boost your chakras in the park by joining a fun-loving group of other participants for Yoga, Zumba and other stress eliminating exercises.

Sometimes if the weekends are the only free time n you have, then check out some of these other funtastic things to do in Houston.

  • Farmers market
  • Second Saturday Buffalo Bayou Boat Rides!
  • Recycling Saturdays
  • Hermann Park (hike-bike trails-Japanese garden-boat/train rides)
  • Plant and Vegetable Gardening Classes

What makes me an expert on events in Houston? I’m glad you asked. It’s that I work here, live here and I've been there and done that, at just about every kind of event happening in the city and a few around the state as well.

Houston's Annual Celebrations
  • The Houston Rodeo
  • Home And Garden Show

Houston Events:Cultural Activities

There is no culcha gap in this city nor a shortage of representation of the diverse ethnicity in H-town. Early Texas settlers were primarily of Irish, Scottish, German and African American descent. Today’s wave of people seeking a new beginning in the Lone Star State are from all over the world. Many of them love to show off the dance, dress and drama, as well as other exciting and entertaining aspects of their cultural heritage.
  • ST Patrick's Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Greek Festival
  • Chinese New Year
  • Dragon Boat Festival

Houston Weekend: Tours and Festivals

Most of Houston's weekend events I found are outdoor activities. We still can expect a few mild days before the cold fronts start blowing into town. So get out your to do list or Google Calender and pencil in these cool events.

I suggest you grab a comfortable pair of dancing shoes, some cheap sun glasses and a little moohla, bread or dinero, depending on what part of the hood you live. That's all you need to get you in on the action at the Puerto Rican/Cuban Festival, Buffalo Bayou Boat Tours and a local Green Festival.

Puerto Rican/Cuban Festival

Things in downtown will have definite Latin flavor when the Puerto Rican/Cuban Festival kicks-off October 25, 2009. Comparza Cubana y Puertorrqueña. Professional Dancers Alexis & Brittney and Studio 8 Dance Teams join Edgar Daniel "Mentiras" and others at this annual festival.
You can try your hand in the dance and domino competitions. The Cuban and Puerto Rican community of Houston will share their cultural heritage and pride on stage in Herman Square.

Buffalo Bayou Boat Tours

You've heard about them and thought about them. This weekend you get another chance be a part of one of the boat tours on Buffalo Bayou.

One of the largest gatherings of Mexican fruit bats make their home in the underpinnings of the Waugh St Bridge. You'll be taken at dusk to see the emerging of a bat colony. Throughout the year naturalist accompany the tours to get a look at the marvelous swarm of emerging bats from the comforts of a pontoon boat on Buffalo Bayou.

Community Green Festival

This local festival has a lot more than just your usual trappings. It emphasizes all things renewable, sustainable and green. At this event you can expect the children’s activities to include a free petting zoo, face painting and a scavenger hunt.

On hand will also be farm art, tips on green building and workshops. Did I mention the massage in the garden sponsored by Dentiq- Houston’s Premier Green Dental Office, Yoga by Jennyoga and Devanand Yoga Center.

Houston Weekend Activities

All of these weekend activities are rated A for amazing fun and are seeking a place on your list of things to do. I recommend that you make your reservation's early to see the bats on Buffalo Bayou and purchase your tickets online for the festival in downtown Houston.

Believe it or not the Green festival won't set you back for very much green, because they are simply asking for a donation of any amount to help support the Last Organic Outpost and the Community Farm.

Houston Weekend Events

Greek Festival

An annual Houston event this weekend is the Greek Festival. It's one of the activities in Houston that we all look forward to each year. Make sure you tour the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral complex near Midtown Houston. The tours consist of a video presentation on the history of Orthodox Christianity and our Annunciation parish, followed by a question and answer period with the Cathedral clergy. Learn the symbolism of the beautiful Byzantine-style Cathedral.

For those of you not familiar with Greek Orthodoxy here's a little background info.

Its a denomination that's has a rich liturgical life and a faithfulness to the apostolic tradition.
They have held on to the traditions and practices of the ancient Church. Their worship services are filled with the same pomp and celebrations the early Christians used during the first 10 centuries.
The Orthodox Church remains one of today's invaluable treasures, rich in liturgical tradition from the earliest centuries of Christianity. Their Church membership totals nearly 300 million.

Adult Greek Dance Performances
A Musical Presentation (Folk Dance Program)
Greek Musician (Near West Dining Area)

The dance is a living vital force in the Greek way of life, and its spirit brings people together with a true feeling of camaraderie. It's a fundamental aspect of the Greek religious festivities, national holidays, and family celebrations such as weddings and baptisms - events that center around the church life of Orthodox parishioners.

Free Concerts In Houston This Weekend

All summer long Houston weekends have been punctuated with entertaining events at the Miller Theater in Hermann Park. A must-see show in the line-up for the month of August is Keeping the Music Alive. Its going to be one of the best free concerts that the city has seen in awhile.

One of the reasons great shows like this are possible is the huge talent pool of performing artist in the Houston area. The show on August 22 harnesses some of this incredible talent to honor legends of both music, film and comedy in the form of an amazing music concert.

This exciting Houston weekend event combines music and medicine wrapping free health screenings and consultations into a evening of entertaining interludes. This community centered event is focused on encouraging Houstonians to maintain a healthy lifestyle by bringing preventive health care services to the masses with a musical backdrop.

They've created a fitting tribute to a stellar list of legends: Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Gerald Levert, Barry White and Bernie Mac. The Houston weekend event hopes to reach an audience of over 20,000 with health awareness and the amazing show of entertainment featuring local performers and some of the nations well known performing artists.

Everything will be rolling this weekend by 3PM and the openness of the Miller Outdoor Theater is an ideal venue to have a dialogue on health with members of the community. The ampitheather and majestic trees that populate the park are symbols of growth and vitality that are best enjoyed when you're healthy.

Houston Weekend Events

Buffalo Bayou

Since the weather is clearing-up let me give you the heads up on two great Houston Weekend events in the great outdoors. The Buffalo Bayou looking back tours and Adopt a Beach are scheduled for this weekend. The tours present an excellent chance to see Houston waterways that we often take for granted.
I'd still give'em a call before heading out to the Sabine street boat dock.

Adopt A Beach Weekend in Houston

There is a need to get the word out about keeping the beaches and bayous in Houston clean. If you carelessly toss your trash on the ground it'll wind up in the bayou somewhere and when it rains, it'll clog up the darn thing and water will backup into the streets instead of being able to flow down stream like it should.

Teams will be going out this weekend to the various bayous and beachfronts to pick-up behind the litterbugs. We need as many volunteers as possible to participate in this Houston weekend event. Support this valiant effort visit the Adopt a Beach website it may not be an ideal thing to do at the end of the week, but it is an important way to abate what's happening to this important natural resource.
