Things To Do In Houston-April-2016

There is always plenty of stuff to do in Houston during April. Since it’s still a few days before the humid summer arrives, you can have a splendid time enjoying outdoor activities.




 A trip to the San Jacinto battleground is my recommendation. It's great for a couple, a group of rambunctious teens, or a gaggle of active adults looking for excitement, entertainment and some serious fun in H-town.

Things To Do With A Group

This month is your chance to do what every self-respecting Texan should do at least once in their life, visit the San Jacinto battleground. There is plenty to see and do. It's more than enough to keep any size group busy on a daytrip.

San Jacinto State Park

• San Jacinto Monument
• Battleship San Jacinto
• San Jacinto Battleground Site
• Crosby-Lynchburg Ferry

A ride of over 400ft to the top of the monument, that’s billed as the world's tallest war memorial , will allow you to see the entire beautiful view and serene atmosphere of the park all at once. If you’re short on time, take a quick visit to the battleship. Or try meandering around on foot or vehicle through the state park, if you like.

The park is conveniently located a short 35 mile jaunt from downtown Houston. It makes a nice half hour ride anytime of year. I’d put it on my list of places to visit for Saturday getaways for Houston couples.

7 Haunted Places To Visit In Houston

Could ghost be the reason these buildings
are abandoned and boarded up.

We found several places to visit in Houston that are haunted by paranormal activity, but still considered safe to visit.

 People claim to have heard the sound of music being played, heavy objects being moved around and footsteps in areas that are closed off.

   Most of the incidents occurred in buildings  where people work, live and play everyday.

 I’m really reluctant to say there are just ghost hanging around these places, because a lot more seems to be going on than just sightings.

                                    La Carafe Restaurant

 La Carafe is a restaurant located in Houston's historic Market Square where the figure of a large black man and a shadowy female figure seem to have taken up residence in the building. For years employees have reported hearing footsteps and the sound of heavy objects being dragged across the second floor.
Peter Haviland of Lone Star Spirits included the restaurant on his list of the Texas Top Ten Most Haunted.

                               Malibu Grand Prix Entertainment 

 Two Malibu Grand Prix locations in close proximity to each other sit abandoned after one became the scene of a violent robbery.
 Three employees were stabbed and murdered at the Southwest Freeway location.

                                  One Of Houston's Most Haunted Cemeteries

 Many prominent figures of early Texas were buried in Founders Memorial Cemetery. One of the Allen brothers, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and many of the officers and soldiers who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto are among the remains interred there.

 This particular cemetery is also a regular stop during a popular ghost tour in Houston. It’s known for the numerous photos of orbs, (spheres of light) captured by ghost hunters in the cemetery. 

                                    Thomas Street Health Center 

 This building has a long history housing people who were suffering and near death. It’s a former Southern Pacific Railroad hospital. At one time, it was also a recovery clinic for cancer patients from M.D. Anderson.

Currently it’s a Harris County Hospital District's facility that provides medical and psychological services to men and women diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

 The building was built back in 1910 on the grounds of an army hospital. An anonymous source that often works there at night, reported seeing several spirits roaming the premises. She described a little boy that comes out to play late at night and a railroad worker that roams thru the hallways in a story you can read on ghostheadfinder.com.

                                         Beeler Cemetery

 Using a single grave to bury multiple bodies underneath it is a method of burying victims of disease like dengue or yellow fever. The absences of properly marked headstones that date to the early years in Houston indicates that the Beeler cemetery has several mass graves.

 Beeler cemetery is located off of Enclave Parkway and Interstate 10. It’s a place that has a history of car wrecks on one corner of the lot. According to police reports, two people were found tied up with their throats slit open on this very property.


                                             Jackson Lake 


 Homeowners and neighbors who live in and around what is now-called "Lake Jackson Farms" have reported apparitions, strange noises, and a few cases of full hauntings.

 The lake was once a crucial source of water for a local plantation owned by two brothers during the 1840’s,. The back-story claims that during a nasty fight, one of the Jackson brothers murdered the other and threw his head into the nearby lake.

 From that day on apparitions have appeared as well as the scary sounding noises said to be a headless man, presumably the brother, searching for his head.

The plantation was also known for tough field bosses that often beat to death slaves and later on the convicts, that supplied the back breaking labor that replaced forced servitude on the plantation in the 1870’s.

                                             UTMB Ghost 

 The image of the UTMB ghost" was sandblasted off of the building, only to find that it soon reappeared on the building. And, removal of that image only resulted in it relocating itself to another place on the building.

 Ewing Hall bears a mysterious likeness of a man on one of its exterior walls Known as the "UTMB ghost" or "The Face."

Legend has it that the previous landowner didn't want his property sold. After his death family sold the land anyway. Then the medical school built a building there. Since then, an image of a man's face seems to appear on its exterior walls.

 There are a lot more than 7 haunted places worth visiting in the city. Our list only includes the ones we consider safe enough to take your family and kids.

 Professional and amateur paranormal sleuths have visited many of these places and documented some of the strange sounds and eerie apparitions and you can too.

  You’re  never further than a few expressway exits from amazing destinations waiting for you to discover their brilliant treasures.  Whether your goals are to  awaken your creative spirit, incite your cultural intelligence or cuddle up with that someone special you can enjoy doing it on the bayou.

It  will connect you with both MacGregor Park  and  Mason Park two of the city’s  largest  greenspaces.   Occasional trees along the banks and some upland woods are part of the panoramic view along the 1 1/2 mile paddle trail.

Carpenters Bayou

Carpenter’s Bayou is home to cypress trees, bird rookeries and a few alligators in the protected habitat. It also  has hike and bike trails. Its waters are an integral part of the paddle trail that  flows southward from around Lake Houston and  merges into  Sheldon Lake State Park .

White Oak Bayou Hike and Bike Trail

A great trail  for walking,  cycling or  jogging. This is the bayou described above in the swimming hole raid led by police. Its paths are  wide and smooth with ample places to rest along the 8 mile path. It's pretty easy to connect with both the Heights Bike trail and  Memorial Park.  The Southern half is well lit for night riding

If you make it a point to be among the first people to enjoy the new bits and pieces of the trails as they are completed, you'll have no trouble finding a private alcove that's perfect for skinny dipping or a picnic for two.  

There are several more miles of hike and bike trails currently under development. Each of them will reveal fantastic new recreational opportunities and scenic views begging to be enjoyed.

1. Don’t expect flag down cabs as you traverse the city. You will have to call the taxi dispatch office at least an hour in advance to arrange to be picked up.
2. There is plenty to see and do in Houston whether you’re visiting the heart of the city or one of the many suburban communities.
3. There always seems to be street and freeway closures, most are listed pretty fast by GPS systems. If you run into one that isn’t ask local convenience store clerks and repairmen for directions they tend to know the area better.
4. Houston traffic jams slow to a crawl, to avoid them wait until after 9:am and 6:pm to hit the streets.
5. If you want to see as much of the city as possible rent a car, weekly and weekend rates are usually the best deals and don’t forget to pull out that AAA or other discount card to get a reduced rate,

Local bus service is $1.25 (correct change required) and usually takes about an hour each way and may require you to transfer to more than one bus to get you most places outside of the downtown area. If most of your traveling is downtown or in the Texas Medical Center the Metro-rail train will get you there faster for the same price as bus fare.
7. If you are flying to the city and not staying near N. Sam Houston tollway, we suggest you consider using an airline that stops at Houston Hobby airport. It is way easier to get in and out than the terminals at Bush which maybe the only choice for some airlines and international flights.
8. You can usually find good dinning within walking distance of hotels, convention centers and shopping malls. Most of the major hotel chains have a bar and restaurant, which tend to be pricey, but are some of the top rated dinning facilities in the city.
9. The city of Houston Parks and Recreation department has several nice fitness centers where you can workout while away from home.
10. The city is 579 square miles. A smart and frugal way to see more of the city is to make all your visits to one part of the city at a time instead of trying to do everything in one day.

Traveling In Houston

Here's a few things you should keep in mind when traveling in Houston. Your options are limited to taxis and local bus service.

There are several taxi cabs in Houston. They are all dispatched through central locations. If you travel by taxi, ask the driver for his card and cab number if you would like him to become your unofficial chauffeur during your visit.

Houston's Metro bus service is available from 5:am to 12:pm on most routes. They are cheaper than using a cab to get to the malls, museums and short trips around the downtown area. Historical Markers In Houston

Visiting historical markers in Houston is something that can be entertaining, enlightening and enriching to do. There are many Texas Historical Markers and places on the National Register of Historic Places that dot this city’s landscape, living testaments of days gone by. Places To Take A Date In Houston: Free Concerts

One of the thing that we highly recommend on our hot list of inexpensive things to do in Houston for couples on a date, is to visit some of the fantastic places where they can catch some incredible Houston festivals and lively free concerts in Houston.

There is always some good ol' foot stomping music being played somewhere in Houston's Downtown District. When the constantly changing weather cooperates with the outdoor shows, you can expect the crowds to be thick and tame downtown.

Two popular music venues for this seasons "things to do on a date for couples" are the Houston Sound “Fall Concert Series” in Market Square Park and Sunday’s “Concert In the Park” at Discovery Green.

Free Concerts In Market Square

The Houston Sound is a new kid on the block. It’s an organization conceived by Dan Workman from SugarHill Studios and Ross Wells of Zenfilm. Their mission is to remind the world that H-town has a vibrant, live and still kicking music scene. They are the masterminds behind the new concerts in Market Square Park.

Expect to see a fresh new look when you visit this age old Houston landmark. It was recently given a much needed facelift to usher it into 21st Century. The City Of Houston added a small stage area and the park now features two nifty dog runs, a few shade trees, a garden and lots of outdoor art.




This spot has been a mainstay of the city for beau coup years. It's bounded by Preston, Milam, Travis, and Congress. The square is on land donated to the city back in 1854 by Augustus Allen. I remember back in the late 70’s when I was going to high school in Midtown Houston, the old Market Square was a back street gathering spot.

It was anchored by Burton Tailors, the place where many well known musicians from around the country would come to have their soulful threads custom made and a head shop that sold some of those well remember old school psychedelic blacklight posters of Angela Davis and Jimi Hendrix.

Houston's Sunday's In The Park Concert Series

Two of the artist performing this month are Lady D and Low Man Joe.

Known as the “The Diva of Zydeco” since 1996 when she was received her first nomination for the Houston Press Awards Best Zydeco/Cajun Band in Texas. Back In 2003, she won the award and has been fortunate enough to get nominated each year since then.

If you have not heard them yet, hear is your chance to give Low Man’s Joe a listen. This up and coming band proved they can seriously rock the house and walked away as the undisputed winner at the Houston House of Blues and VH1 "Battle of the Bands".
