Cinco do Mayo events in downtown Houston, are a tradition in this city as it prepares for the entry of the summer months.

Midtown Houston residents can beat the hustle and bustle of the crowds of tourist by taking their family out for a long overdue Sunday day trip, to the museum or an intimate evening of star gazing?

These are just a few of the free events that are happening this week, during May in H-Town.

Midtown Houston Needs Affordable Green Homes

A prototype of an affordable, environmentally friendly house is being built in Houston, inspired by noted architectural designer Roger D. Rasbach . Roger dedicated 30 years of his life to identifying and refining this technology, which promises to transform the way we build houses in this country.
Roger designed a 2,100 square-foot house in San Antonio that boasted a $580 annual electric bill.
The house is constructed with a thermal shell of structural insulated panels. This eliminates the need for conventional framing and insulation, that we see so much of here in Midtown. This type of home construction:

* Reduces energy use 50% to 70%, compared to a conventionally constructed house
* Can be assembled more quickly than conventional stick-built houses, reducing construction costs
* Is constructed without the use of wood
* Is virtually termite-proof, fire-proof, and mold-proof
* Does not release chlorofluorocarbons
* Is structurally sound to survive severe storms, hurricanes, and earthquakes
* Can last a century or more with minimal maintenance

“Getting Healthy-Getting Healthcare,”



That's the theme of this year's Annual Health & Social Justice
Gathering taking place this weekend at Texas Southern University.

This event is taking a unique approach to get the word out on how to improve your health. Their focus is on encouraging healthy behaviors and sharing information about current healthcare policies in the U.S. that affect your health.

Throughout the day there will be screenings, as well as presentations on healthcare and the obstacles related to obtaining healthcare and achieving good health.

The event also features Carlton’s Closet: A moving play about HIV. It’s presented by Truth Theater Productions. How Cigarette Companies Target Inner City Neighborhoods will be addressed by Dr. Valerie Yerger University of California at San Francisco.

Pulitzer Prize Winning Columnist in Midtown Houston

Mr. Leonard J. Pitts, Jr., Pulitzer Prize winning, syndicated columnist and author, on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Will be in Midtown Houston at St Paul’s United Methodist Church at 6 p.m.

Mr. Pitts writes for the Miami Herald and his column appears in the Star Section of Houston Chronicle every Monday. His progressive attitude toward many subjects such as social justice, equality, politics, and our American Society reflect reason and logic and clearly represent spiritual principles and values.

Pitts' column, "We'll Go Forward From This Moment," an angry and defiant open letter to the terrorists, circulated the globe via the Internet generating upwards of 30,000 emails. It has since been set to music, reprinted in poster form, read on television by Regis Philbin and quoted by Congressman Richard Gephardt.

Let’s Play Ball



The world of sports takes center stage at several venues this weekend in Houston. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Sweet 16 has been narrowed to the "Elite Eight" and will get underway at Reliant Park.
If you're stuck in front of a computer at game time, try the NCAA on Demand for great highlights and live coverage of the game.

The Houston Shell Open is at the Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course. Let’s see, I know there are few more events that I’d like to recommend for you to check out. Oh yeah, now I remember.

If you're lucky enough to be off work today, why not go to Memorial Park and check out the Bayou City Art Festival. Nestled amidst the towering Texas pines, the Festival’s more than 300 visual and performing artists some from around the corner and others around the world. The parks meandering trails will be transformed into an outdoor art gallery blooming with juried art and multi-cultural music and dance.

The Rodeo comes to Houston

Get out your hats and boots Saturday and go see the trail riders. They will parade through downtown Houston to kickoff this year‘s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo which begins Monday.


Free Boat Tours

I was looking for a place to have a great family trip that was inexpensive and fun, when I discovered you can take a boat tour of the Port of Houston. No, the boat doesn’t leave from Midtown, but Pierce elevated takes you close to the port, where you can enjoy the free Houston boat tour.

The tour is free, but you’re required to reserve space in advance. To meet port security requirements,bring a photo identification for passengers ages 18 and older.

Free Stuff

McDonald's is the best place to find free stuff this week. They announced they're giving away McSkillet burritos Thursday, February 28, and Friday, February 29.
You can't just go in and say "hey, give me a free burrito". It’s only free during breakfast hours when you purchase a medium or large drink.

Things to do In and Around Midtown This Weekend

The Inprint reading series host author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who burst onto the international scene with her debut novel, Purple Hibiscus. The story of a 15-year-old Nigerian girl caught up in the wake of a military coup.
Nigerian-born Adichie, a natural storyteller, will be in Houston for a reading of her latest work, Sunday Feb-17th. The new book,

The Inprint Series will be at Cullen Theater, Wortham Center 501 Texas Avenue. Tickets available only at the door on the evening of the reading starting at 6:45 pm, $5 general admission, free tickets will be given to students and senior citizens 65+

Midtown's Farmers Market

Have you heard the latest weekend weather reports saying Houston will probably flood? Don’t let that stop you from visiting the Midtown Farmers Market. They will be at 3701 Travis Street one block north of W. Alabama,
in the parking lot of Monica Pope's t'afia Saturday 8 am - 12 noon, rain or shine.
The market has Midtown’s freshest produce, vegetables, fruits and herbs. It’s a great place to buy roasted, fair-trade & organic coffee. I can’t forget to mention the cut and potted flowers, and plants that are perfect for that empty spot in your home.


Midtown's Ann Bell

Midtown’s favorite artist Ann Bell represented by Darke Gallery, 5321 Feagan, works will be shown February 16-March 1 2008. The artist’s opening is Saturday 5-8 PM at the Darke Gallery.
Ann believes that art is as essential to life as water or air, and frequently shares her art with others by opening her studio to the public one Saturday afternoon each month.

Bell creates landscape paintings using non-toxic, water-soluble materials. Her painting capture the feelings of some of the places she’s visited and her fanciful visions. Ann’s Midtown Houston studio is at Art Square, 2711 Main St. in the building with Art Supply.

Free Stuff

Do you envy the clean, uncluttered look of the Mac’s desktop? I don’t any longer. Once I heard about ObjectDock I had to have it for may PC. It’s my favorite download freebie.

Rather than having a bunch of icons on the desktop, your icons can be put along the bottom of the monitor into docks. ObjectDock can also be used to replace the Start bar entirely freeing up valuable screen real-estate.

Working in Midtown Houston

A traffic accident sent Joseph Benson’s career as a caterer and chef spiraling into a tailspin, when he could no longer lift heavy pots and pans and reach things on the high shelves, because the accident resulted in the lost of his legs. The first time I heard about Joseph Benson, he was talking about his current career as a counselor at Search in Midtown Houston on Praise 92.1 FM radio.

I stopped by Search ,to talk about Midtown Houston. He began by reminding me that this part of town was considered Third Ward for a long time. He also acknowledged there are positive changes being made in public safety and the appearance of the neighborhood since the community leaders started their Midtown campaign.

Helping the Homeless in Houston


“My job and my calling is this area, most of our clients hangout in this area or come to Midtown to access the various services that are available at Search, Palmer Church and other outreach facilities.”

“My calling is helping the homeless get off the streets of Houston.”

His positive attitude was infectious as he told about helping others.He expressed his belief that the entire city benefits when the homeless are given a hand-up and not just a hand-out.

He should know better than anyone else, because Joseph doesn't just work at Search, he was one of their homeless clients too.
