Things To Do This Week In Houston Texas

One of the neat things to do this month in Houston is to be on the lookout, because freeways will become the exhibit hall and billboards are the canvass for sensational pieces of art.

Houston artist C. Ellen Hart converted a portion of her collection of digital images from reflections of downtown Houston, in glass and water, to billboard sized works of art.
You can find one of the pieces, Downtown Reflections (Evening Light) on the southbound side of I-45 North at Cavalcade, between 610 Loop and I-10.

hands and arms

It's time again for Houston's most unique social event. The InHouston Networking Mixer.

Think of it as pay-it-forward networking or Servant Leadership. This mixer is not just different but, better than any sit down for lunch networking event.

The action gets started around 3pm at The Tasting Room in Uptown Park.

Drop in on the InHouston networking community and find even more opportunities all over the city, to hook-up with like-minded business professional.

Freelance Camp Houston

Another event you don’t want to miss is the 3rd official "Freelance Camp".

It's an incredible opportunity for Houston's freelancers, entrepreneurs, independent business owners, and everyone else to get in a little networking, share ideas, and hopefully discover new opportunities.

It's all happening in Midtown Houston, at the Houston Technology Center, 410 Pierce St. April 11th from 10 am to 4 pm. Need more info about this networking event check the freelancecamp.org website.

Networking Events In Houston

people standing around

By now, the New Year jitters should have passed and it's high time you get your mingle on by connecting with other like minded professional at a few of the cool networking events in Houston. .

Some of my favorite events in Houston involve networking.

InHouston

One group InHouston, has been twitting and texting about their March networking mixer, at the Tasting Room in Uptown Park. Their no cover, open mixer promises to explode your networking efforts.

Servant Leadership Seminar

Save a few business cards for the MBA Council of Houston's Seminar on Servant Leadership – The High Performance Link, March 6 at the University Hilton.

Their speakers will enlighten learners on "Servant Leadership". A leadership philosophy that has grown from the 70's buzz word coined by Robert Greenleaf, into a fledgling win-win organizational strategy, group mantra and personal journey for aspiring business leaders.

Houston Technology Center

If you'd like an early start, join the crew from the Houston Technology Center, March 2009, Open Coffee Club. If you're a late sleeper try dropping by their Start-up Houston Happy Hour.

Local Meetups

Maybe you prefer informal networking groups, try connecting with other community members through the local Meetup website.

That's where you'll find fellow adventurers, Buffy lovers, rock climbers and folks who are livid about art and meditation.

Networking 101

If you're new to this type of relationship building, here's what you can expect at a networking social.

They usually feature a leader or advocate to discuss issues that the group members have in common. Even at good power networking event, the atmosphere should be relaxed and conversations should flow easily and never be limited to strictly about business.

The Best Networking Events In Houston

People at Networking event
(Photo from recent inHouston event.)

If you are new to the Houston area or a experienced social networker, I've got the word on the best networking events in Houston.
I've checked-out some off-line activities where you can participate in locally held relationship marketing events that you'll want to add to your short list of things to do.

Meeting people off-line can help you make the most of the LinkedIn contacts you've developed and could be just the hook-up you need to jump-start a flat-lining career. Their online community is touted as the one platform everyone serious about networking should join and learn how to use.

One of the most popular networking events in Houston is sponsored by the crew over at inHouston. Many of them actively participate in LinkedIn. The inHouston's monthly professional business networking get togethers are held throughout the city. They're a great group to connect with online or off-line for anyone interested in being successful in relationship marketing.

Several other events where like-minded business people gather to share their experiences are hosted by the Houston Technology Center, 410 Pierce street, in Midtown Houston. I recommend the start-up Houston happy hour and sunrise Toastmaster meetings.

My hands down favorite is the UH Small Business Development Center, where you can pick-up the 411 on internet marketing from our local guru Dick Meyers. His post "One Social Network I Couldn't Work Without" pointed out LinkedIn is the one social network everyone should use.

Combining these awesome local networking events with your online social networking should get your name on the invite list of the best networking events in Houston, where you'll meet some of the finest folks on the planet.

It’s also

Texas's largest technology business incubator / accelerator.
Their offices is where entrepreneurs, interested in building a successful technology company, can come to obtain help to get started.

The center offers business guidance, access to capital, introduction to service providers and entrepreneurial education to client companies. Why not make a reservation this weekend to attend the an upcoming orientation to find out how your company can benefit from their services?

Here is the technology centers’ calendar for more details on classes and orientation.

The Rodeo comes to Houston

Get out your hats and boots Saturday and go see the trail riders. They will parade through downtown Houston to kickoff this year‘s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo which begins Monday.

Free Boat Tours

I was looking for a place to have a great family trip that was inexpensive and fun, when I discovered you can take a boat tour of the Port of Houston. No, the boat doesn’t leave from Midtown, but Pierce elevated takes you close to the port, where you can enjoy the free Houston boat tour.

The tour is free, but you’re required to reserve space in advance. To meet port security requirements, bring a photo identification for passengers ages 18 and older.

I’ve made it easy for you to get more details or to sign up for the tour of Houston’s port.

Free Stuff

McDonald's is the best place to find free stuff this week. They announced they're giving away McSkillet burritos Thursday, February 28, and Friday, February 29.
You can't just go in and say "hey, give me a free burrito". It’s only free during breakfast hours when you purchase a medium or large drink.
