Free Events This Weekend in Midtown Houston

Once the dew has burned off the grass and the sun has begun it's climb to it's noonday resting place an inexpensive get-away that will save on gas and money, is a fun day-trip to experience urban farming, soul food and an eclectic festival.

Everything I mentioned above is free this weekend and as close to your home as Midtown Houston. Here's the deal!


Who doesn't love the flavorful taste of homegrown food, but most of us lack the green thumb that is required to extract a finished product from Mother Earth. There is an easier way to satisfy that discriminating palate for brightly colored fruit and veggies in all of their shades of ripening.

For a reasonable price you can purchase succulent produce locally grown and fresh picked at this weekends Midtown Farmers Market.

The Midtown Houston Farmers Market happens this Saturday rain or shine over on the big block in Monica Pope's Taffia's parking lot. These are not your everyday supermarket variety produce, take a look at their untouched photos and try not to drool all over your keyboard.

Just a stones throw from the market.



The distinct smell of browning waffles and southern fried chicken are a regular treat in Midtown Houston along-with the latest gossip at "The Breakfast Klub's First Saturdays".

This kid-friendly weekend gathering features moonwalks, face-painting and and other fun things including entertainment geared toward young Houstonians.

If you've never taken your kids to this free event, this weekend will be a great opportunity to let them have fun while you enjoy the hip urban atmosphere that has made 3711 Travis a favorite spot for hungry people seeking good food and good friends. There is also the Kross the Street Market if you want ot get in some Midtown Shopping.





Once the kids are ready to cool off, head a few block south to Herman Park for a few more free things to do this weekend.

The park has a splash pad with water certified safe to drink, shooting up and raining down when you least expect it. There are trails that meander through the Japanese garden and along the man-made lake. The boat concession is not one of the free things but it's still fun trying to maneuver those oversize water toys.

Bring plenty of film for the camera and stop by Fiesta and get a couple of big boxes to ride and glide down "hippie hill". If you hang around till dusk you be treated to the Saturday night finale of the 29th Annual Chicano Festival's live bands and a whole lot more.

Things to do In and Around Midtown This Weekend

The Inprint reading series host author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who burst onto the international scene with her debut novel, Purple Hibiscus. The story of a 15-year-old Nigerian girl caught up in the wake of a military coup.
Nigerian-born Adichie, a natural storyteller, will be in Houston for a reading of her latest work, Sunday Feb-17th. The new book,

Half of a Yellow Sun, also set amid a military struggle has earned robust praise from critics

The Inprint Series will be at Cullen Theater, Wortham Center 501 Texas Avenue. Tickets available only at the door on the evening of the reading starting at 6:45 pm, $5 general admission, free tickets will be given to students and senior citizens 65+

Midtown's Farmers Market

Have you heard the latest weekend weather reports saying Houston will probably flood? Don’t let that stop you from visiting the Midtown Farmers Market. They will be at 3701 Travis Street one block north of W. Alabama,
in the parking lot of Monica Pope's t'afia Saturday 8 am - 12 noon, rain or shine.
The market has Midtown’s freshest produce, vegetables, fruits and herbs. It’s a great place to buy roasted, fair-trade & organic coffee. I can’t forget to mention the cut and potted flowers, and plants that are perfect for that empty spot in your home.


Midtown's Ann Bell

Midtown’s favorite artist Ann Bell represented by Darke Gallery, 5321 Feagan, works will be shown February 16-March 1 2008. The artist’s opening is Saturday 5-8 PM at the Darke Gallery.
Ann believes that art is as essential to life as water or air, and frequently shares her art with others by opening her studio to the public one Saturday afternoon each month.

Bell creates landscape paintings using non-toxic, water-soluble materials. Her painting capture the feelings of some of the places she’s visited and her fanciful visions. Ann’s Midtown Houston studio is at Art Square, 2711 Main St. in the building with Art Supply.

Free Stuff

Do you envy the clean, uncluttered look of the Mac’s desktop? I don’t any longer. Once I heard about ObjectDock I had to have it for may PC. It’s my favorite download freebie.

Rather than having a bunch of icons on the desktop, your icons can be put along the bottom of the monitor into docks. ObjectDock can also be used to replace the Start bar entirely freeing up valuable screen real-estate.

Midtown Shopping

You never want to go grocery shopping when you are hungry so Sat 01/05/08 start your day at the Breakfast Klub and get your eat on. Don’t forget to visit Kross The Street Marketplace they have an eclectic selection of goods from scented candles to jewelry for your shopping pleasure.

01/05 is also our first Saturday of the month and the Midtown Farmer's Market will be operating beginning at 08:00 AM, T'afia Restaurant 3701 Travis Street @ Alabama, on the big block.

The farmers market is Midtowns best source for buying locally grown produce. Their greens are not just the greenest in color, all of their produce is really greener than most others you buy in the store because, they don’t have to be trucked in from the California or the valley here in Texas, thus they reduce the emissions from the trucks that would have transported these produce from across the country.


Even if you belong to the COAST TO COAST AM WITH GEORGE NOORY fan club and you don't believe all the hype about global warming, you must admit that we may not be able to undo the past, but we should try to leave this planet in a better state of condition than currently exist, for future generations.
