Things to do In and Around Midtown Houston This Weekend

If you like pina colda, and taking walks in the rain, croaking bullfrogs, colorful water birds, and the site of beaver lodges, I've got a group of people you'll love hanging-out with. The Houston Regional Sierra Club.

The group sponsors frequent outings, social gatherings, daytrips and special events that will introduce you to nature and the natural world in and around Houston.

This weekend they're planning a visit to the Katy Prairie. The Mary Manor Preserve. is a local area preserve, that provides much needed natural habitat for more than 600 species of wildlife and plants.

They have expert guides, to take you through the conservancy but, the best part is that these events are open to Sierra Club members and visitors alike.

Let me warn you, if you join them on one of these exciting excursions into the wilderness, it might end the "same old stuff every Saturday warmed over" blues.

SXSW Interactive 2009

All onboard GPS devices are set to Texas and the SXSW Interactive festival this weekend.

Get tips on developing the big-picture analysis, recharge your creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. This is one of the few places where geeks and non-techies get together and discuss, showcase and often create the coolest new media technologies.

The week long event in the west Houston suburb of Austin, (LOL) has a lineup of some of the country's most creative capital, on panels and offering keynote addresses throughout the week.

A couple of the names you may recognize are:

Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine

Guy Kawasaki, the managing director of Garage Technology Ventures, an an early-stage venture capital firm.

Quincy Jones, the prolific multi-Grammy winning producer, composer, arranger and humanitarian.

Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com

On First Saturday's in Houston if you're looking for a cool place to go, oh me oh my oh, you can have big fun, down on the bayou.

The best event in Houston this weekend has to be the boat tour of Houston's Buffalo Bayou with author and historian, Louis Aulbach as your guide.

After a couple of hours drifting past swatches of lush green banks and picturesque city views, along the banks of the birthplace of the Big "H," you'll have a better picture of the ecological and historical features of the bayou and maybe find out the real story behind the name of our popular waterway.

Live Music in Houston This Weekend

Kenny G

It seems that good music is everywhere you go this week. Beginning downtown with the Latin Grammys, to southwest Houston's Arena Theater. The best live music this weekend has to be the smooth jazz sounds of Kenny G.

For the first time ever he has been nominated for a Latin Grammy award.

That really epitomizes how much the groove of his music and the success of his career has grown, since his days as a soloist with the Love Unlimited Orchestra.

You can expect the live show at the Arena Theater to feature classic Kenny G music, spiced up, with up-tempo tunes such as “Sax-o-Loco” and “Salsa Kenny” from the Latin-infused album "Rhythm & Romance."
