AAA estimates that 61 percent of Americans will celebrate Memorial Day weekend by visiting or partying with their family and friends. It's an old custom. Originally called Decoration Days' the tradition was to visit places from the Civil War. It eventually gave birth to the today's custom of traveling to visit friends and family.

The holiday was first suggested by Major General John Logan, head of a veterans organization called the Grand Army of the Republic, who urged: “Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”

Today, we no longer focus on just the veterans from the internal conflict, but we take the time to honor all veterans during Memorial Day weekend.
