A fun-packed Houston weekend should include an adventure tour. These are outdoor excursions where you can enjoy guided walks through former old growth forest, canoeing or riding on a pontoon boat. Each of these Houston tours give you a chance to see some of city's last natural ecosystems. Many of them are slowly fading into the concrete jungle.
Your adventure takes you into the natural habitats that are part of the protected nature parks along Armand Bayou, Buffalo Bayou and Sheldon Lake Park. The natural treasures, are populated by yellow pine, hickory, elm, sweetgum, oaks, and bottomland hardwoods and support active communities of wildlife .
Sheldon Lake Guided Tours
You will love taking a picturesque adventure on the guided nature walk that meets in the open air pond center at the park.
It's a group walk at a casual pace through the trails to learn some little known facts about Houston's native flora and fauna. The half-mile walk often includes the sighting of small animals, birds and other wildlife native to Texas and this area. The discussions and sites are driven by the group's interests.
Travel Down Armand Bayou In A Canoe
Turn and average weekend into one filled with an adventure, paddling out into the backwaters of Armand Bayou on one of the guided canoe tours. You'll enjoy a leisurely morning of sightseeing, animal watching, wetland education, relaxation and fun. It's an ideal way to get an up close and personal glimpse of numerous birds, reptiles, deer and other residents who are starting their day at the water's edge.
The tour travels approximately 2-3 miles round trip. Beginning and experienced paddlers are welcomed. Knowledgeable guides provide everyone with a brief orientation. Life jackets are provided. Check their calendar for the exact departure times of scheduled canoe trips.
Boating On Buffalo Bayou
The 2nd Saturday of every month is a great day to enjoy an adventure on Buffalo Bayou, part of the longest paddling trail in Texas. A large comfortable pontoon boat takes passenger for a cruise on the watery passageway. You'll go deep into the natural habitat, where the residents are cottontail rabbits, turtles, fishes, snakes, and occasionally a lonely gator.
The boat rides last about 30-minutes each, beginning around 10am and ending about 2pm, on the 2nd Saturday of each month, as long as the weather and water conditions permit safe traveling.
Every Houston weekend adventure trip is enjoyable, enriching and full of excitement. I highly recommend taking part in any one of these calorie burning, memory making Houston tours.
