Our top picks for March are organizations whose names you may not know, but I’m sure you have seen some of the fantastic work they are doing to enhance the city’s cultural landscape.
These local groups are recognized around the country for presenting spectacular events. You can count on their programs to be entertaining and enriching instead of the same old boring stuff, where you have to sit and listen to a talking head that leaves you feeling tired and bored and like you have wasted your hard earned cash.

Artist Community Collective
A recent installation was "Corner OF Canaan" it reinforced the old adage “you can't know your future until you know your past.” It presented the work of Texas photographer Ben Davis, who is using his craft to bring the relics of the past to us and to generations in the future. "Corner OF Canaan" focuses attention on preservation of a few of the remaining buildings from antebellum, pre-Civil War East Texas.
To see other exciting exhibits like this visit the Artist Collective at the Midtown Art Center, on La Branch across from Houston Community College.
City Hall Farmers Market
Smack dab in the middle of downtown Houston you will find the best produce west of the Pecos. It's full of a variety of locally grown or produced fruits and veggies, cheeses, coffees and other ready-to-eat or packaged to-go food.
The market often has live music and a Chef’s Corner, which bring out Houston’s top culinary talent, to prepare and serve samples of dishes made with products from the market. The 2014 Spring Market happens every Wednesday, in front of City Hall, from 11 am to 1:30 pm.
Houston Bakery Tours
This week is a good time to start planning and arranging things to do for Spring Break. Every teen and tween will be fascinated with seeing how their favorite pastry, bread and baked goods are made during Mrs Baird's Houston Bakery tour.
The facility is open to visitors on Wednesday and Thursdays at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It’s a tour that won't cost you a lot of bread, but you will need to make your reservations at least 10 days in advance.
Sea Center Texas
A FUNtastic place that adults like and kids can enjoy too is Sea Center Texas.
The main attractions at Sea Center Texas are their huge aquariums with fisheye views into the world of sea creatures from the Gulf Coast. You'll will be amazed with the amount of useful information your group of adults or teens will gain about fish and all that tall grass you see growing along the waterways. Our coastal salt marshes are important to the oysters and clams that make their home in the waters along the Texas Gulf Coast. Sea Center Texas welcomes visitors to stop in Tuesday through Sunday 9am to 4 pm.
Toyota Center Tours
If you have some time off this week you can get a behind the scene look at Houston’s Toyota Center. The tour is a chance to see the arena's basketball court, court-side suites and luxury lounges where picture perfect views of the games, concerts or shows are always available.
It’s a good place to take a group of friends and/or family, who live out of town for an up close view of a well-known part of Houston. Each tour lasts close to an hour. Reservations are required and must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
